Sabah Bakery & Hospitality Expo | An Industry Insights!



If you're planning on getting into the F&B industry in Kota Kinabalu, the 3-Day Sabah Bakery & Hospitality Expo is a good place to survey for vendors and getting in touch with suppliers of various ingredients and also packaging vendors too! the Food Trucks opportunities are there for you to inquire more information. 


SBNHE is the first bakery and hospitality exhibition held in East Malaysia which aims to invite individuals and companies to further understand this industry as well as making new bonds with suppliers of various companies. At the same time, it will enable participants of booths to showcase their brand and expand clientele at the same time. To further boost the exhibition, the organiser also invited the International Federation of Chinese Bakery and Confectionery Association (Asia) as well to be part of their guest exhibitor.


The exhibition consist of various participants from different industries such as Bakery Machinery, Food Ingredients, Frozen and Dry Food, and Packaging, Industrial/household cleaning chemical, F&B Software as well as others related to the food industries. The event itself also hosts participants from a few neighbouring countries such as China, Taiwan, Brunei, Indonesia with a total of 135 booths.


Booths presented are the back-end operations of every business around and they are your ingredients suppliers like Bake with Yen, HongSeng cold storage, and Consfood which are some recognizable names, while machinery and packaging are not every time your easily accessed vendors; I had a great time learning and getting insights of the back-end of the F&B business just by roaming around and learning what the exhibitors have to offer! Food sampling and on-site displays of culinary arts are a good experience during the expo. 


One of the key booths that caught my attention is the Food Grade Packaging vendors. As a persons who is particularly attracted to packaging when I do most of my purchase; I learnt there is a difference between food-grade packaging and also non-food grade; as they are made in consideration of sanitary needs and are more suitable to handle food products. Boyyy the boxes were sturdy af for a cake! 


Anddd if you are stopping by, I highly recommend to try out the DimSum booth! It was darn addictive and yummy! I walked out happy with my own loot, can't wait to eat them at home steamed up hot and nice for brunch!

Evening with 2-Michelin Star Chef, Emmanuel Stroobant & Potatoes USA!


Did You Know Potatoes can be just as Atas on a Michelin level? 

Well, it was a great opportunity to experience live, as 2-Michelin Star Chef Emmanuel Stroobant, prepares wonderous potato lovely sets of recipes with our everyday potatoes as Potatoes USA presents An Evening With Chef Emmanuel Stroobant - an exclusive cooking demo session at The Pavilion, Shangri-La Tanjung Aru Resort.Thank you to the people at Potato USA, if you have not read my earlier post this year on the their Fries Fiesta - Calling all Potato Peoples! | US Fries Fest 2019 Kota Kinabalu you may read at the link! 

Also present was Indra Balaratnam, Consultant Dietitian and Founder & Owner of Indra Balaratnam Nutrition who gave a talk on the nutritional benefits of US Potatoes. As a consultant dietitian who has 22 years of experience in the field of nutrition and dietetics. Did You Know?

  • 110 Calories for a medium sized Potato = 1 Orange. 
  • The skin-on potato has more Potassium than a medium sized Banana 
  • Potatoes contains Vitamin C, which is suppose to be 30% of the daily value


Indra also shared that although many people these days are worried about their carbohydrate intake, carbohydrates are one of the key nutrients in performance nutrition.  Athletes engaged in high volume and high intensity training require adequate amounts of carbohydrates for energy.  U.S. potatoes are an example of an excellent source of carbohydrates. They are rich in vitamin B6 and C, potassium, folate, fibre and antioxidants.

 Borned and raised from Belgium, Chef Emmanuel Stroobant’s career began at a tender age of 16 with the cleaning of dishes in one of his country’s best restaurants. At 23, he opened his first restaurant in his hometown, Liege.

The real career begins after travelling the world, he made a life-changing decision by heading to Asia. His maiden stop was to Kuala Lumpur in late 1997 and was awarded the ‘1999 Best Expatriate Chef’ by World Asia Media. In that same year Stroobant and his wife Edina moved to Singapore to yet again experience another uncharted episode. Their first restaurant, Saint Pierre became the only Singapore member of the world-renowned Relais & Châteaux, the prestigious association of the world’s finest hotels and restaurants; and has been awarded 1 Michelin star by the second edition of Michelin Guide Singapore in 2017. Imagine, It was an honor to be able to meet him in-person and to even get hold of his recipes for the potato dishes he has prepared for the night!

Chef Emmanuel loves working with U.S. Potatoes because of the quality and versatility of the product. Being the staple of nearly every cultural cuisine, from comforting classics to new contemporary work of art, the US potatoes possibilities are endless.  He demonstrated 4 exciting recipes using U.S. potatoes that are sure to excite your guests when you serve them during the coming Christmas and New Year parties.  Let's break them down:

US POTATO WEDGES IKURA - You know it's extra Atas when your daily cheesy wedges suddenly becomes fusion with the finest Ikura from the Favourites of Japanese Cuisines, added with Celeriac, a new to my personal taste, that has a mild hint of celery. It was a good opening to a funfilled flavourful night.

US HASHBROWN AND SALMON - One of my 2 favourite dish for the night! The salmon and poached egg combo is an All-Day Breakfast lover's common favourite! topped on crunchy hashbrown, you wouldn't even know you're eating sinfully. :) Loved the texture and the taste combination.

US POTATOES WITH CAVIAR - Number 1 on my favourite dish of the night, served as a soupy and cropped Potatoes. It felt very expensive and to the naked eye, the potato would look like a huge yummy looking scallop. a vegetarian scallop. Wish there was more soup, because it was bursting with amazing flavour!

US RUSSET POTATOES SALAD - a very easy everyday salad, that is wonderful for most lunch boxes and picnics/potlucks. Served with Breaded Japanese Cuttlefish. This salad is not your alang-alang Potato Salad. 

The line-up was nice, and it was filling to be honest, I was expecting a hungry me as it was quite of a fine dining experience. 2 Star Michelin style. I had a great night with amazing people and informative, information on the lovely potato. I shall never judge the carbs on the potatoes as much anymore.
